Mr. Luis E. Bretones

- Currently doing the Master course in Special Education at Nova Southeast University Florida USA.
Mr. Bretones is a certified coach by USFA, who loves his athletes and the sport of Fencing. Since childhood, he has been involved in sports as an athlete. He competed in all the national championships winning high standing positions in his category obtaining medals by team in all the competitions. At the age of 11, he started fencing in the city Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. In two occasions during national tournaments, he ranked 5th and 6th in the individual foil category in the categories of Cadet and Junior and in the rest of the national competitions that he participated was among the best 16 competitors in his modality. At the age of 15 years old, he won the second place in his state, qualifying to participate in the most important international championship in Cuba called Ramon Font in Memorian that took place in the state of Pinar del Rio in 1981.
In 1993, Mr. Bretones founded Florespa Fencing Club in the city of Juiz de Fora in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. His students got excellent results at the state and national level. In 1997, Mr. Bretones was promoted by the Brazilian Para-Olympic Committee to be the Para-Olympic National Coordinator in the wheelchair fencing sport. He participated with the Brazilian national team at the first World Championship, which took place in Bonn, Germany in 1998.
Our coach moved to Miami in 2001, from this time Mr. Bretones had been working hard to reopen his club, but it was not until 2011 that Florespa Fencing Club restart serving the Miami Community. Nowadays, he is a veteran competitive athlete in the United States obtaining outstanding results, such as a silver medal and two bronzes in the Florida Sunshine State Tournament, category veteran mixed foil. In 2016, our coach competed in international Pan-American interclub tournament in San Jose Costa Rica obtaining a bronze medal in foil veteran category. He also competed in national championships obtaining the 20th place among the 64 athletes in the veteran men foil category during a tournament celebrated in Wisconsin during the same year. Mr. Bretones’ work begins to stand out in the state of Florida because of the results obtained by his athletes (1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronzes). This year, during the last national youth tournament held in Baltimore, Maryland, one of his athletes won the 9th place among 69 competitors in the category Y-10 Men Epee. Our director aims to highlight the participation of our club in national and international championships.
