Eventually you will need a full set to compete in tournaments outside the club. Here's list based on priority of purchase and comfort of the student.
First make sure your are sure which hand your fencer will be competing with? Equipment is often sold in different versions for left and right hands. Please confirm with coach on which hand you child will be fighting with and make sure you are mindful of which one you order. Right handed is usually the default option so the lefties have to sure.
1. Mask $40 to $60
The club masks are cleaned regularly, but we prefer each child to have their face mask for comfort and cleanliness. Make sure your make is ready for electric combat. There should be a gray strip on on the chin protection.
2. Glove $10 to $20
Small hands in adult gloves make it difficult to grip a foil. Once the student has their own glove to fit their hand, fencing becomes more fun! Borrow a few gloves from other students to find the size you need?
3. Practice Foil $40
This foil is used for practice, training and drills. Now the student can practice footwork while holding the foil to build arm strength. We start with a size 2, french grip. Please confirm with coach whether you child will fighting right or left handed.
4. Plastic Chest protector and Jacket $50 to $100
Especially for young fencers, the jackets are too big and feel awkward when trying to move fast. Baggie equipment is easier to score points on than proper fitting. Female chest protectors fit the woman better and are far more comfortable to wear than the male version.
All Uniform Wear has the Florespa Fencing Club logo on file for embroidering on jackets.
5. Body & Mask Cord $25 (2x)
This cord is used to score points during electric competitions. We recommend buying two sets, once for practice and one for competition. Younger students are not as mindful of the cords, play with them and cause them to wear out faster due to abuse. A loose wire in a body cord can hold up a tournament as the judge or coach tries to diagnose your equipment. The body cord and the mask cord are two seperate purchases unless then come in a set.
6. Lame $40-60
This is the silver vest worn over the jacket for electric competition. The vest is covered in metallic wire and allows the foil tip to complete a circuit to score a point.
7. Electric Competition Foil $40
This foil has a pressure tip and electric wire to score points in competition. This foil is not used for practice. Its the last pieces equipement a competitor needs in order to compete in tournaments outside of the club. The size and specs are the same as the practice foil. The foil and wire are very easy to break. We recommend purchasing and building a cover from PVC pipe when carrying the foil in the equipment bag.
8. Equipment Bag
Eventually you need a really long bag to carry all this equipment around!
There are two main equipment providers for fencing are:
Absolute Fencing Equipment
Blade Fencing Equipment
